Two hours from Barcelona, and a world away, lies the tiny wine region called Priorat. The remote rocky hills produce intense, full reds that many consider to be among Spain’s elite wines. The secret is in the slate filled soil, called llicorella in Catalan, and the extreme weather of the region. Grape vines on the roughly 4,000 acres of steep hills suffer hot dry summers and severe cold winters creating low yield grape vines that provide concentrated flavor.
