Is the Bling-Bling era over?

We know the Bottle Service Era is done. So is the Weak Game Era.

“Not even the richest people are feeling untouched by our current financial crisis. In their personal lives, as in business, the purveyors of luxury are sizing up what it all means. Some of the questions: Is it unseemly to spend money publicly? Will people still shop for the all-important holiday season? Is this the end of bling?

Some luxury executives are simply waiting to see what happens. Barry Sternlicht, chairman and chief executive of the private investment fund Starwood Capital, has been on a luxury investment tear in recent years, buying up such things as champagne maker Taittinger, the Hotel de Crillon in Paris and Baccarat. Last week, when I asked how he’s doing these days, he said he’s “just waiting out the tsunami.”
