Some thoughts:

1. Wow.

2. Losing the weight obviously effected Oscar De La Hoya. Physically he seemed weak. Much of his weight was lost in his legs. Losing weight in your legs is good for fly Model girls. Losing weight in your legs is bad for fighters.

3. Oscar De La Hoya seemed to have no game plan. He didn’t use his supposed “size advantage” at all. He was also not physical with Manny.

4. Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach impressed me with their game plan. The side to side and in and out movement completely baffled De La Hoya. Footwork, handspeed and Ring Generalship won this fight.

5. Manny’s lead straight left was the punch of the fight. He took over from Round one with it.

6. Manny’s speed and combination punching was chopping up De La like squid in a Mexican Ceviche, especially in round 7. I have said before that Oscar has had mad trouble with fast, skillful boxers. Tonight was no different. I had no idea that Manny was going to be so intelligent with his speed and not stand toe to toe, thus giving Oscar a chance. Oscar had no chance. That was the difference.

7. De LA is finished as a fighter. I have said before that De La has not defeated a fighter of any significance since Ferocious Fernando Vargas in 2002. He is completely irrelevant as an elite fighter now. The template to defeat him is too easy to follow. I could probably beat him. And I haven’t stepped into the ring since my Golden Gloves days. Save for Entering The Dragon, of course. (I would have to cut back to like a pack of cigarettes a day though.)

8. De La still deserves credit for never ducking anyone and being gracious in defeat. That’s G.

9. De La’s historical place is in question now. Losses to Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Bernard Hopkins, twice to Shane Mosley, and Felix Trinidad damage his standing. So do the “gift decisions” he was given against Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker and Felix Sturm. Especially the Whitaker fight. Whitaker dominated him.

10. Pac-Man has big fights on his horizon. Manny Pacquiao VS Ricky Hatton makes sense. Pac wins that one too. Hell, he probably could beat Michael Phelps, he is that on a roll, even in swimming.

11. Manny Pacquiao VS Floyd Mayweather Jr is the fight that will have to happen. Too much money for it not too.

12. Manny Pacquiao has transcended boxing to be the most important sports figure in the world today. Don’t believe me? Go to Manilla.

13. Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach are the Gs.

What are you talking about? Oscar doing more for his people? Have you ever witnessed what it’s like in the Philippines? There’s more poverty there than in Mexico. Manny gives hope to the Filipino community across the GLOBE. Haven’t you seen the HBO specials? He literally feeds his people by hand-delivering to them, builds schools for them, and above all, gives us (yes, I’m Filipino) inspiration to be better people in our lives. C’mon man, it’s so easy to talk trash.

So before you go and say “Fuck Pacquiao,” check his records. He’s so humble. After the match Pacquiao said, “You’re still my idol Oscar.” And Oscar says back, “No Manny, you’re MY idol now.”

^^De la Hoya is not like Ali.

It was strange to watch the Golden Boy get thoroughly outclassed tonight.

Pacquiao v Mayweather Jr – hopefully it happens – will be great.

I enjoy your boxing insights Mr. Mason. Thank you.

Although I said “De LA is finished as a fighter.” He is just beginning as a promoter.

He didn’t do to bad. Fighter payday + Promoter cut = Mad Payday.

Not bad for a Saturday night.

Manny and Oscar are both good fighters and good entertainers. We pay them well and they gave us a good fight and good entertainment. Both are good winners and good losers. They are good in sportmanship and both are generous in their spoils. The audience glued their eyes in the tube, while the fighters sweat their blood and bite for their priced money. All of us, the fighters and the onlookers, have had our fair share. Nobody gets home a loser. It was a good fight, everybody happy with sweet memories to remember. We all go to sleep contented and tomorrow another day will pass. All are contented and then another day will pass again. But the memories of Manny and Oscar (and us) will live on and on and on…

micade77, why don’t you be gracious like De La Hoya was gracious in defeat? and to sum up what Christian said, Pacquiao has done so much for the Filipino people in terms of financial support and even more importantly, moral and emotional support especially in the trying times that lie ahead. On another note Hatton and Pacquiao will be great.. they have similar styles of fighting. it will absolutely be craZZZEEEE. Mayweather jr is also a great champion. but i think hes fighting style is pretty boring.. imo..

I did a post about my projections about the fight. it wasn’t a shock for me that Pac came through with a win ( http://ryanshub.blogspot.com/2008/12/pacquiao-dela-hoya-mismatch.html ) . I’m just surprised that he didn’t go to much to the body, guess I’m surprised as Oscar is more surprised, that left hand lead to the head lands at will for Manny all night, it was a great performance, I hate to say Goodbye to ODLH cause I’m a big fan, but it’s time to face the music, he’s just over the hill.

DOn’t worry Oscar, the sport that you helped from sinking will be in good hands with great fighters like Manny Pacquiao. Kudos to Oscar, Manny and the promoters for making this “Dream Match” Happen.

I’m glad that De La Hoya is just starting as a promoter. Pacquiao will get a chance to fight and defeat every boxer that the golden boy decides to promote. Then Pac Man can also start promoting all the new fighters coming out of the Philippines and beat Oscar at that game too!

This Micade is an ignorant dumb fuck. Pac-man delivered like a true champ.
He was much smaller with shorter reach and was still able to defeat De La Hoya. Its about time for a new king to sit on the throne. Stop hating on Pac-Man due to the fact he is on a roll or he is Filipino. Mexicans have had their time to shine, and now a Filipino fighter needs to be given his due credit to those who don’t support him. You guys just have to accept what is obvious; that Pac-Man has taken over period. So, Micade shut the fuck up! Read the news and know the facts before you go outvtalking shit bitch. LOL

Dela Hoya was a verygood boxer, no doubt about that, but that was then during his time, this is now. No one else made a fool out of himself but him, he took it too personal because Pacman beatup all his guys already, he could`nt accept the truth that some fighter from the ” Philippines” have done something like that to his what he calls, Goldenboys, so he decided to put a stop to it, look what happened to he did`nt even able to finish the fight and he quit, what kind of a leader is he? All his boys fought Pacman until they hit the canvass, so my question is what kind of a legend is he? Thats not our legend in the Philippines like, sorry Oscar you did that to yourself and no one else! Manny Pacman Pacquiao Congrats men! You are the real LEGEND! Godbless!

What Oscar as done for the sport of boxing can “never” be replaced, because guys like Pacquiao would have never even consider boxing had there not been a “Golden Boy”.

Big props to Manny for not permanately damaging Oscar’s brain. He showed lots of compassion in the 8th round between the 4-5 punch combinations so Oscar could finish the round.

I stop cheering for Manny to destroy Oscar once it obvious he was done… That was in the 7th round.

This was an embarrasing to the sport. De la Hoya was just thinking about the paycheck and didn’t even try. Mexican? More like a Mexi-can’t!

Mr. De la Hoya said something that made me think of Muhamed Ali at the end of his career. Or was it his trainer. I can’t exactly contribute the expression but it struck me as extremely relevant.

He/They said, essentially, “I could see it but I couldn’t respond.” That means he saw the puch but couldn’t pull the trigger because his body just didn’t have the reflexes it once had. Ali said the same thing…exactly. I remember and I’ve seen both fighters in their prime.

So if anyone can email Mr. De la Hoya (his website is ‘closed’ for “contact”), would they please tell him to retire? He’s good looking, personable, intelligent, and has a great smile. He has a future outside of fighting and will make a good living without exposing himself to further punishment.

I ask that he not end up like Muhamed Ali whom I admire very much but who I think fought for too long. Please don’t make the same mistake. Nobody questions your courage or desire to win. Nobody. Just please don’t let the sport that allowed you to attain heights unimagined, degrade you into a physical loser by diminished capacities. Please retain your intelligence and not have it beaten out of you by one more fight. Please?

You were beaten by a younger, stronger, faster fighter. Not more courageous. Both had equal courage none of which can be denied but please take this as a warning to not continue. If you can see the punch but not execute, please retire because we as fans, don’t want to see the debilitaion we saw in Ali. So please. Save yourself now.

    Pete

No need for hate here. I take my hat off to Oscar for a class act after the fight, he is truly the only Golden Boy of boxing. But his time has come and gone and with it a new star is born. The Pacman will have to prove himself to the Hitman & other boxers waiting in line for him. Congrats to the Pacman.

I lost respect for De La Hoya a long time ago. He’s not a true warrior anymore. A true warrior fights until he knocks the other guy out or gets knocked out. Oscar has been pussying out of fights for years now. This fight was just further evidence of that.

First off, to Pete Bolte, just FYI, Delahoya has a future outside fighting. He owns GOLDENBOY PROMOTIONS INC. dumbass. And also, delahoya is far from Ali’s condition, so wipe your tears and watch figure skating instead. Boxing is for real men.

As for Hans Solo’s comment. Pacquiao has to prove himself? Get your head out of Chewbacka’s ass buddy, Pacquiao is the current pound for pound king. He has proven himself. Forget Ricky Hatton, Pacman would easily destroy him. I want to see Pacquiao and Mayweather, that would be the Dream Fight.

As for Oscar, you were good buddy, but it’s time to hang the gloves. Thanks for the memories.

And last but not the least, Mr. Pacman, the Mexicutioner, the Mexican Destroyer, The Mexican Assassin. Enough eating Mexican Tacos buddy, move on to bigger and better things, it’s time to call out Floyd Mayweather. The former Pound for Pound most boring fighter in the world. Beat his ass Manny, he’s nothing but a Poser!

    Go Pacman, Go Philippines! Mabuhay!!!
