Saturday, April 12 we will see Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico and Alfonso Gomez (18-3-2, 8 KOs), from Whittier, CA step into the ring for a 12 round title fight from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Cotto is on a roll defeating Zab “Super” Judah and Sugar Shane Mosley in his last two fights. He desperately wants a fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather and a win over Gomez puts him in that direction.

Gomez is best known for being on the show “The Contender” beating guys like Ahmed “Babyface” Kaddour and Jesse Brinkley. Since the reality show, he has gotten wins over a faded Arturo “Thunder” Gatti and a faded Ben “Wonder” Tackie.

Although, Alfonso Gomez has been a tough warrior in all the fights I have seen him (and in the “Contender” fights it was kind of difficult to tell his skills because of the cheesy editing) I think he is in way over his head with Cotto.

I had the opportunity to see Cotto spar during a January trip to Puerto Rico, and he looked very impressive. Almost as impressive as the girls in Puerto Rico.

Look for Cotto to systematically dismantle Gomez with his body attack. Gomez will give it his all, and land some shots, but look for him to fold in rounds 6 to 10.

Kermit Cintron VS Antonio Margarito

Also on the card, Kermit Cintron (29-1, 27 KOs), from Reading, PA (via Puerto Rico), battles former champion Antonio Margarito (35-5, 25 KOs), from Tijuana, Mexico in another 12 rounder. The hard hitting Cintron will be looking to avenge the only loss on his record. The winner will most likely face the winner of Miguel Cotto VS Alfonso Gomez in a welterweight title unification bout.

Joel Casamayor (36-3-1, 22 KO’s)Stops Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20 KO’s) in dramatic fashion at in the tenth round at the Morongo Casino somewhere in the California Desert.

In a brutal fight, Katsidis was dropped twice in the first round by the former Olymipic Gold Medal winner. Both knockdowns were caused by hard lefts.

Katsidis was able to recover well and turned the fight around. He began to catch Casamayor with some vicious, punishing rights.

Katsidis pressure seemed to be taking a toll on Casamayor. In round six, Katsidis hammered Casamayor with a left uppercut the body that hurt Casamayor and had him moving like a Weeble Wobble. He then followed up with a big right and left that sent Casamayor through the ropes and onto the ring apron.

Casamayor was able to recover, but the fight seemed solidly in Katsidis favor.

Round ten, Katsidis shot out of his corner like a missle throwing punches ment to do serious damage. Casamayor then caught him with a stunning counter left hook. Katsidis fell like a piano being tossed out of a window.

Katsidis made it to his feet, but Casamayor swarmed to force the stoppage.

Casamayor wants Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera next. He might have to settle for Nate Campbell.

Katsidis, has proven himself to be the heir-apparent to Arturo Gatti. True blood Warrior.

Manny Pacquiao wins by split decision in rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez

Manny Pacquiao wins by split decision in rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez

Some thoughts:

1. Even though I picked Pacquiao to win, I scored the fight a draw. Either way, the fight was so close, that either man could have won.

2. Marquez’s reputation only rises after this fight and he once again has proved himself to be a true warrior.

3. Complaining about the decision is futile (unless of course, you are using it as leverage for a rubber match). It was a close fight. I have seen at least ten thousand worse decisions in boxing.

4. They are talking about not having a third meeting between the two fighters. My experience says they will have a third fight. They might just wait a little to build it up.

5. Pacquiao’s left is one of the most violent punches in boxing.

6. This fight was a classic.

7. Jasmine Villegas, the girl that sang the National Anthem, is a future star.

Ice-T, West Coast Legend, Dopest Track

Ice-T, West Coast Legend, Dopest Track

Truth be told, when I was a prototype G, making small deals, playing in the killing fields, I didn’t always feel Ice-T.

And I have plenty of people emailing me things like “Yo, Mike Mason, you always give props to Go-Go music, the Bridge and the Five Boroughs, but where is the love for the West Coast?” and crap like that. Take notes, get blinded by the spokes, skippy; I give mad props to the West. (If I am in The States, where else is better to lamp come summertime?)

In retrospect, T was a true pioneer, Soul on Ice, who could flow slow and still twist your tounge up, and rock the party from night till the sun’s up.

Sure he got served by LL Cool J, but then again, who didn’t?

Either way, “Mind over Matter” always got me on some innovative stilo.

I remember the first time I met T: he laughed at some corny joke I made about Swooping Fly Girls. Brief meeting of the minds. Game recognition. Cool Cat on the real.

The first Heistman/Rapper.

“Syndicate’s making the move
With the ski masks…
And Now I’m housing the long CASH”

“A lot of doubters
Said it couldn’t be done by me
them same suckers
Are now looking from under me”

True inspiration for a young impressionable prototype G.
