Female Thieves hustle jewellers for ring

Two thieves who stole a £15,000 diamond ring from a jewellers in Edinburgh are being sought by police.

Two women, believed to be of middle-eastern origin, walked into Lime Blue jewellers in George Street and asked to look at a ring in the window display.

They acted as if they wished to pay for the ring but when the shop assistant turned away, the thieves walked out of the shop with it.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “This was a brazen high-value theft carried out by two women who are believed to have visited a number of shops in George Street yesterday afternoon.

“We are appealing for any members of the public who may have noticed the suspects in George Street, either before or after the theft took place, to contact us immediately.

“Similarly, anyone with any other information that can help us identify the two women should also get in touch.”

This is a classic hustle.

And in my experience, is better preformed by women.

Globe-trotting jewel thief Mike Eternity captured

Globe-trotting jewel thief Mike Eternity captured

No. Not me. Check it:

IT sounds like a plot from a Hollywood script, but US authorities say it is real.

For almost 20 years a suave, charming jewel thief travelled the world, bouncing between Australia, the US, Canada and Israel, and along the way stole tens of thousands of dollars, possibly millions, worth of diamonds from unsuspecting victims.

The story also has a Hollywood ending.

Last week on the US-Canadian border, American authorities finally put handcuffs on the alleged globe-trotting jewel thief.

His name is not easy to pronounce, Moshe Tsitsaushivili, although his alleged colourful, Hollywood-friendly alias contributed to his arrest.

The name on the fake Israeli passport Mr Tsitsaushivili allegedly handed over to the US Border Control officer was as brazen as the offences he is accused of committing.

Tsitsaushivili was posing as “Mike Eternity”.

Mr Tsitsaushivili, who was born in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, used his charm and skill as an expert diamond cutter to gain the confidence of jewellers across the northeast US in the 1980s, police allege.

He would offer to work for free or “a small stipend” and gain the business owners’ trust and when eventually allowed access to the store’s jewels without supervision, he would go on a lunch break and never return.

I hate Hollywood endings.

Huge diamond could be a Record Breaker

Huge diamond could be a Record Breaker

A diamond unearthed in the southern African nation of Lesotho could yield one of the largest and highest quality round polished diamonds.

Experts in Antwerp, Belgium who analyzed the 478-carat stone determined it to be of the highest color grading available for a white diamond.

“What makes it more remarkable is the color and quality of this stone,” said diamond consultant Neil Buxton.

The diamond is a D color, which is the highest possible graded color you can get, and there is a chance of getting a 100-carat plus round stone with the highest color and clarity rankings.

The diamond, which was found in September, ranks as the 20th largest rough diamond ever found, but is not the biggest ever taken from the Letseng Mine, which is co-owned by Gem Diamonds Ltd. and the Kingdom of Lesotho, a country of 2.1 million that is surrounded by South Africa.

Two bigger stones — 603 and 493 carats — were found in the mine in 2006 and 2007, respectively, the company said. A 601-carat diamond was mined there in 1960.

The biggest diamond ever found so far is called the Cullinan diamond – which is part of the British Crown Jewels – and is measured at more than a staggering 3,100 carats.

Blood Diamond prices up 16 pct in 2008

Blood Diamond prices up 16 pct in 2008

De Beers has boosted rough diamond prices by 16 percent so far this year due to strong demand, the firm said on Tuesday.

De Beers, 45 percent owned by mining group Anglo American, said in July it was cautious about developments in the second half due to a downturn in the United States, the top diamond jewelery market.

Last month, De Beers said a difficult retail market in the United States, which accounts for around half of all diamond jewelery sales, was dampening sales of cheaper, mass market items using lower quality gems.

Anglo American has been a great stock play since I started following it back in 2004. But it seems like the Down Economy might even soften the Diamond Trade. I still think it will hold strong since every girl in middle America still wants a rock for her wedding.
