Irish Gangster Whitey Bulger Captured in Santa Monica

Authorities at a multiagency news conference in Boston praised their own persistence and tenacity in the capture of legendary crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger, and credited public service announcements for leading them to the fugitive in Santa Monica.

The announcements were launched Monday and Tuesday in 14 markets across the country where Bulger and his companion, Catherine Elizabeth Greig, 60, had been spotted or had past ties.

Bulger, 81, who has been on the run for more than 15 years, fled Boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with at least 19 killings, racketeering and other crimes that spanned the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. He headed an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals and other illegal activities in the Boston area.

Whitey should have gone to Santa Monica, Mexico in the northern part of Mexico City. Or Santa Monica, Surigao del Norte in the Philippines.

Not Santa Monica, California.

George Best: Old-School Irish G

George Best – Genius, Maverick, Legend

George Best is known as one of the most naturally gifted footballers of all time. In Northern Ireland (conicidentally, the same place my Father and Grandfather are from, Belfast), they even say “Maradona good; Pelé better; George Best.” And Danny Blanchflower said, “He has ice in his veins, warmth in his heart and timing and balance in his feet.”

But his achevements on the football pitch aren’t what make him a member of The G Manifesto Hall of Fame, its his achievements in partying and swooping fly girls.

Best always lived an extravagant lifestyle. And like all great athletes and Playboys, smoked cigarettes. When asked later what happened to the money he had earned in his career, Best replied: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

His love of booze and the International Playboy lifestyle eventually caught up with him, but he still plugged away until age 59.

And like many Irishmen, Best was also a master of word play:

He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that he’s all right.
— (his assesment of Manchester United’s David Beckham)

I’ve stopped drinking, but only while I’m asleep.

In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol – it was the worst 20 minutes of my life.

I might go to Alcoholics Anonymous, but I think it would be difficult for me to remain anonymous.

People always say I shouldn’t be burning the candle at both ends. Maybe they haven’t got a big enough candle.

It’s a pleasure to be standing here. It’s a pleasure to be standing up. (On being made Footballer of the Century, 1999)

Because I saw an advert on the side of a London bus inviting me to “Drink Canada Dry” (On going to play for Vancouver Whitecaps)

They say I slept with seven Miss Worlds. I didn’t. It was only four. I didn’t turn up for the other three.

Reporter Sue Mott, taking Best’s mobile phone number: “God, do you realise half the women in the world would pay good money to get that number?”

Best: “Half the women in the world have got it.”

And my personal favorite:

I used to go missing a lot…Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali made a sentimental journey Tuesday to discover his Irish roots, and met distant relatives during celebrations at the local town hall and a nearby castle.

Thousands lined the streets of Ennis, western Ireland, to cheer the motorcade carrying Ali as the three-time world heavyweight champion visited the home of his great-grandfather Abe Grady.

Fans adorned streets with red, white and blue USA bunting and flags, while shop windows competed to display the most impressive posters honoring Ali — including one tongue-in-cheek portrait of him appearing ready to knock out an unpopular Irish politician.

Ali, who is 67 and battling Parkinson’s disease, offered a few playful jabs to cameras but made no public comments and steered clear of throngs of autograph-seekers, among them hundreds of kids whose schools closed early for the event. Police blocked off roads and kept crowds in line with railings.

Grady settled in Kentucky in the 1860s and married a freed slave. One of their grandchildren, Odessa Lee Grady Clay, gave birth to Ali — then Cassius Clay — in 1942.

Genealogists pinpointed Ali’s Irish links in 2002, but Ali had never visited Ennis before.

His visit to Ennis Town Hall was broadcast live on big-screen televisions outside, where locals also took in a live concert by Irish traditional musicians, including best-selling accordionist Sharon Shannon.

Ali’s wife, Yolanda, said her husband’s Irish blood might help explain his legendary ability to bludgeon his opponents with blarney as well as punches. She stayed close at Ali’s side throughout the public events, talking to him and steadying him as they walked arm in arm.

When you look at Muhammad’s pugilistic skills and his loquacious ways, I am sure if his great-grandfather was alive, he would swear it came from him. If he were alive today I bet he would be in every pub talking about it too,” she said.

Many people call Muhammad Ali the “first Rapper”.

My Irish Grandfather was always smooth with the poetry.

Good to know Hip-Hop has a little Irish in it.
