Wild Card Boxing Club, Hollywood, CA: It Ain’t Easy

“When I was a young fellow I was knocked down plenty. I wanted to stay down, but I couldn’t. I had to collect the two dollars for winning or go hungry. I had to get up. I was one of those hungry fighters. You could have hit me on the chin with a sledgehammer for five dollars. When you haven’t eaten for two days you’ll understand.” – Jack Dempsey

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” – Muhammad Ali

Many people think I spend all my time in nightclubs, Gentleman’s Clubs, Restaurants, on Planes, getting Custom Suits Made and at Topless Beaches swooping fly girls during summertime.

I have to admit, there is some truth to that. Especially the swooping fly girls at Topless Beaches in summertime thing.

However, what many don’t know is that I usually take a month off from the difficult lifestyle of an International Playboy and get back to my roots. And when I say, “get back to my roots” I mean spending a month in Hollywood, in a small apartment, with no car, and go to The Wild Card Boxing Club, Hollywood, CA every day, all day.

I literally live on Vine Street. Minus a few trips to Beverly Hills to work on a little “project” I have going on. I did this in March and April this year.

I get real “street”. Every day I wake up go to the gym, chill for a while, then come back and workout or spar. I don’t wear Custom Suits until the weekend comes. And I swoop a little fly Mexicana girl I know from the hood some nights. Other nights I just stretch and read. Real soulful.

If you have never been to The Wild Card Boxing Club, the place is crazy. It’s small. It is about the size of four boxing rings (it has two boxing rings). There are about 100 people in there at any given time. The place has unbelievable characters. The intensity is off the charts. It is a straight up Madhouse.

But truth be told, I feel more at home in The Wild Card Boxing Club than almost anywhere in the world. I straight up love the place. It keeps me grounded. It keeps me humble. Freddie Roach might be the coolest cat in all of America. His MOM is a sweetheart. Pepper is funny as hell. All the regulars are cool as hell and are always helpful. All the pros are mad cool. Manny is The Man. The trainers are dope as hell. I love the energy and vibe. And even though I am basically at the bottom of the totem pole there (I am being humble as usual, I am really not at the bottom, more like a significant level below the Pros and real fighters), I do earn people’s Respect there, and that is really all that matters.

In fact, I think I will make at least a two week pilgrimage to The Wild Card Boxing Club for the rest of my life, no matter where on the globe my travels take me.

I probably won’t be going this summer to The Wild Card Boxing Club, but I do have plans to hit up another legendary boxing gym in another city. I typically do this when I travel.

Now that I think about this, this would be a great idea for a TV show: Have cameras follow me around the globe going to different Boxing Gyms. They could also follow me going to different tailors I know and get Custom Suits made. If it is a beachtown, I could bust some cutbacks and get shacked at some dope surf spots and swoop Topless girls at the Beach.

That would easily be the dopest show on TV. Maybe put it on HBO so we could show Topless girls. It’s kind of crazy that I just came up with this idea and no one else has.

I probably would want to wear a ski mask to keep me low profile.

I don’t want to jeopardize this whole “International Playboy thing” I got going on, after all.

Thoughts?

Custom Suits: Building Up Your Wardrobe

» 21 March 2012 » In Dope, Style » 12 Comments

Custom Suits: Building Up Your Wardrobe

So you are an up and coming G on the rise, and you have decided to take the plunge into the world of Custom Suits.

My advice?

Do it slow.

As tempting as it is to go to your tailor and hand him $45,000 in a CASH in a brown paper bag for 10 Custom Suits, don’t do it (CASH discount).

Over time, you are going to like different things about suits, ie Ticket pocket VS No Ticket Pocket, Peaked Lapels VS Notched Lapels, Straight Pockets VS Hacking Pockets, Center Vent VS Side Vents, Pinstripe VS Chalkstripe, etc etc etc

There is no way you are going to know the answers to all of these important questions until you have play tested some suits. And I mean “in the field”. While Swooping Fly Girls.

And your body may change from all the sparring you are doing.

You want your Custom Suits to be as ill as a convict who kills for “phone time”.

So like I said, take it slow and go one Custom Suit at a time.

Thank me later.

And I don’t mean that wack album from Drake AKA “The Hugh Grant of Hip-Hop” either.

In other news, someone posted the Sergio Maravilla Martínez vs Matthew Macklin fight.

Another brilliant performance from Martínez. Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley were quick to criticize him in the early rounds, but he made them eat their words with a stunning straight left.

Ozwald Boateng: A Man’s Story Documentary Film

» 20 March 2012 » In People, Style » 2 Comments

Ozwald Boateng: A Man’s Story Documentary Film

He’s survived bankruptcy, two marital breakdowns and a persistent habit of referring to himself in the third person: Ozwald Boateng remains a force to be reckoned with. The first black tailor on Savile Row and former creative director of Givenchy, Boateng this month releases A Man’s Story, his 12-years-in-the-making film of his remarkable career. “I’m not nervous about the film, I’m excited – it’s like the first time I sold a suit,” he explains to GQ.com, sitting in an elegant café in London’s Mayfair. “I was always the youngest one around. When I went to Paris for my first catwalk show I was always the kid. Now I’m 45 years old. I’ve got mileage in the tank.” Here he explains how men should wear colour, why Giorgio Armani still inspires him and why everyone should follow the sartorial example of ageing rockers…

Confidence can sometimes be misconstrued as arrogance.

Shirt collars are very important to me. Putting a very soft shirt collar with a formal suit doesn’t work for me at all.

The shoulder line is key on a bespoke suit. Once you have a strong understanding of that, the rest flows from there.

The idea of an ill-fitting suit is something I cannot register. If I register it once then it goes off and destroys! It starts interfering with the mainframe of my computer. It’s like dust in the lens – you grow accustomed to the dust and it starts building up.

Dressing well on a budget is about what we call “strategic shopping”. Spot what you like and then be first in the queue when the sale comes. Be patient enough to rummage through the rails. Sort your basics out and then save up for the key pieces. Make sure you always spend money on shoes though.

The most common style mistake men make? The guy who sits down with his buttons closed and doesn’t know he has to relax the jacket. I understand that the harness of the jacket creates [a particular] shape but there are some rules. Release the button.

If your suit is not handmade, get the other elements really right. Make sure your shirt is pressed and has that sharpness of line. It demonstrates that you pay attention to the way you look.

Style is about consistency and not having just one great day or one great photograph. Paul Bettany always looks good. He’s got a good presence about him. I haven’t seen him slouch and it’s easy to slouch.

‘A Man’s Story’ Preview – Ozwald Boateng documentary film

Casino – that movie really sang for me. It was beautifully shot and you could feel the colours jump off the screen. They must have been in my store when they did that film! The suits were immaculate and there was real attention to detail about the clothes – when [De Niro's] sitting down he doesn’t want to get his trousers creased. If you love what you wear, that’s what you do.

The rulebook says for black tie it should be a black suit with a satin lapel. But there are lots of things you can do to make it different. I like to play with the traditional themes – it doesn’t have to be black, so I’ve got my signature dark purple tux. It’s a bit boring that the women have all the opportunity and the guys don’t.

Duncan Quinn The Gentleman Rogue On Custom Suits

Duncan Quinn The Gentleman Rogue On Custom Suits

Here is another good Custom Suit video for those cats out there looking to step it up into to the beautiful world of The International Playboy.

I have never had Duncan Quinn make me a Custom Suit, however, I dig his steez. Down with the 60′s Michael Caine influence.

I have also visited his shop in Los Angeles. Never the NYC shop or the Miami shop. On my list.

BESPOKE BY DUNCAN QUINN
DIRECTED BY PAUL STONE

Bespoke by Duncan Quinn from Paul Stone on Vimeo.

INKING DUNCAN QUINN
BY GRAHAM SMITH

Life + TImes: There’s a very dangerous aspect to your clothing. Where does this come from?

Duncan Quinn: I suspect the edge lies in the underlying inspirations for everything I do…Michael Caine’s great and iconic movies from the 1960′s, Ian Fleming’s James Bond, The Who, The Clash, The Jam, The Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols, but probably also having grown up with a father who hails from post-war Glasgow and was in the Flying Squad at Scotland Yard, as well as a guy in France who taught me about wine, food and life and who left home several days a week in the small hours with two loaded .45 automatics.

L+T: Who are your top three — living, dead or fictional — style icons?

DQ: Jack Carter: How could you not love the man who said, “You’re a big man, but you’re in bad shape. With me it’s a full time job. Now behave yourself.” He was hard as nails and dressed to kill. Literally. Steve McQueen: He was just a real man’s man. Cars, bikes, booze and cigarettes all wrapped up in clothing that fitted his aura so well it created an icon. Enzo Ferrari: He was probably responsible for the largest number of iconic and beautifully crafted motor vehicles since the creation of the internal combustion engine. His creations have already stood the test of time and are influential on anyone and everyone who loves beautiful feats of engineering today. Try putting a 250 GTO in a room and keeping people away from it.

L+T: If you could give one tip to the stylistically challenged, what would It be?

DQ: Find your style, which is that which you feel comfortable with, not someone else’s. Then turn the volume up a little on the things that make you “you,” whether it is yellow socks or bright green oversize glasses. Then you’ll have your own style. And no matter what you rock you’ll feel confident and thus look amazing.

L+T: Do you believe ZZ-Top was correct when they sang, “Every girl’s crazy about a sharp dressed man?”

DQ: Absolutely without a question of a doubt. Which is why we always joke that our suits come with a “get laid guarantee.” It has never failed.

Somebody Down There Hates Me

Somebody Down There Hates Me

Over at The G Manifesto, we try to focus on the positive aspects of The Life of an International Playboy. You know, the Custom Suits, the Travel, the Fly Girls, the Nightclubs, the Smoking, the Boxing, the Racetracks, the Drugs, the Booze, the CASH, the Grinds, the Topless Beaches, and the overall style of being a Gentleman of Leisure.

However, as the most prolific writer on The International Playboy Lifestyle on the Internet, I feel compelled to let younger up-and-coming G’s on the rise know about some of the downsides of The Life.

When you choose this Life (or more realistically, this Life chooses you) you take some heavy beatings.

Also, you will have a tough time relating to people outside the Life (which is almost everyone).

Even more treacherous though, is the jealousy and envy that will be coming from your “friends”, your camaradas and enemies.

Don’t let it get you down, young G.

Keep punching. And look out for number one.

Success is a great revealer; you really get to know who stands with you and who doesn’t.

Because, a thug changes, and love changes and best friends become strangers.

What You Should Never Put in Your Pockets of a Custom Suit

» 20 October 2011 » In Guide » 1 Comment

What You Should Never Put in Your Pockets of a Custom Suit

Recently, by popular demand, I broke down an excellent Data Sheet on What Goes In Each Pocket of a Custom Suit.

Well, here is what you should never put in your pockets of a Custom Suit:

Your hands.

In case you don’t know, that above, is a picture of Mitt Romney and what looks to be some suspect wimpster.

You should never put you hands in your pockets when you are in a Custom Suit (or get pleats for that matter). Unless of course, you are reaching for the mini-heater or a Bankroll to Grease someone.

While we are on the subject of Mitt Romney, check out him during the most recent debates:

Did you see Romney calling for the referee (Anderson Cooper in this case) for help, when things got heated with Rick Perry?

This guy was the snitch on the playground when you were a kid.

No heart.

Lord help us if Mitt “The Snitch” Romney is our next president.

Finally a G (International Playboy) in a Modern Movie

» 18 October 2011 » In Guide » 11 Comments

Finally a G (International Playboy) in a Modern Movie

One of the things that hurts the modern International Playboy is that International Playboys are not represented in Modern day cinema. Men in movies today are always weesh (no wonder I don’t hardly ever sit through modern day movie garbage).

This hurts us, since we don’t have “The Hollywood Effect” in our favor, that is, girls today have no frame of reference for us modern day International Playboys.

Well, here is a movie with a G:

The movie is called The Buisness, it it is well worth buying.

The part played by Charlie was so realistically done, that I had to do some research on the cat, because no actor ponce could play an International Playboy so convincingly.

Turns, out, the actor, Tamer Hassan, was a boxer, owns a boxing gym (or did) and owned nightclubs before he was acting.

He is from a rough hood in South London also.

I guess he also rocks Custom Suits constantly.

I knew it, the guy has a background similar to my own; no wonder he could play the role of being an International Playboy. Because he was one in real life.

It is also interesting to note, that the cat looks kind of like me. Or at least what I will probably look like in 10-15 years.

Once again, the world makes sense.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mark Cuban and Michael Mason on Patriotism

» 20 September 2011 » In Guide » 5 Comments

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mark Cuban and Michael Mason on Patriotism

Best quote by Floyd Mayweather Jr. during Floyd Mayweather VS Victor Ortiz Post Fight Interview:

(Start watching at 17:00)

“It’s so crazy. I am in America. The country that I represent, the Red, White and Blue.

I make money in America.

I feed the American citizens, I feed the people that are less fortunate in America.

Even when I make it rain, I am still throwing money to Americans!.”

The Most Patriotic Thing You Can Do by Mark Cuban

Bust your ass and get rich.

Make a boatload of money. Pay your taxes. Lots of taxes. Hire people. Train people. Pay people. Spend money on rent, equipment, services. Pay more taxes.

When you make a shitload of money. Do something positive with it. If you are smart enough to make it, you will be smart enough to know where to put it to work.

I don’t care what anyone says. Being rich is a good thing. Not just in the obvious sense of benefiting you and your family, but in the broader sense. Profits are not a zero sum game. The more you make the more of a financial impact you can have.

I’m not against government involvement in times of need. I am for recognizing that big public companies will continue to cut jobs in an effort to prop up stock prices, which in turn stimulates the need for more government involvement. Every cut job by the big companies extracts a cost on the American people in one way or another.

Entrepreneurs are needed to create and grow companies to absorb those people in new jobs. If entrepreneurs don’t create those jobs, the government ends up having to spend more money to help them one way or another.

So be Patriotic. Go out there and get rich. Get so obnoxiously rich that when that tax bill comes , your first thought will be to choke on how big a check you have to write. Your 2nd thought will be “what a great problem to have”, and your 3rd should be a recognition that in paying your taxes you are helping to support millions of Americans that are not as fortunate as you.

Continue

And his response to his article:

MARK CUBAN: “Any Budget Plan That Is Longer Than The Current President’s Term Is A Crock Of ****”

These are not meant to be researched items. These are “streams of consciousness” from the conversation yesterday’s post created.

First some housekeeping. I DO NOT like paying taxes. In fact I hate to throw good money after bad and the way our federal government spends money is rarely good. HOWEVER, I think that this country has created unique opportunities for entrepreneurs and paying taxes is a small price to pay. In fact, as I wrote yesterday, I’m proud to pay taxes on the rewards I have EARNED through my efforts in the business world. Taxes are not a bad thing, mis-allocation of the money we all contribute is.

So what can be done? Here you go:

1. Transparency.

It had been promised often and never delivered. If there was transparency in our budgets and the actual spending of our dollars, down to the nickel. Someone has to see it and approve it. If they can see it, US citizens (with the exception of classified defense spending) should be able to see it. The value of transparency is that we would benefit from the collective brain power of the American people who would be able to provide us in depth education and information. The power of the people at its best. Sure there would be tons of misinformation as people play the traditional partisan games, but I think that websites that take apolitical approaches to the issues will emerge that we could follow.
With complete transparency we could have our own online Super Committee to look for the best places to cut costs and improve efficiency. Without it, we are at the mercy of a “Super Committee” formed purely to make politicians happy.

How do I show my Patriotism?

Well, besides giving back to the people, traveling the world, swooping fly girls and representing America in the best way possible?

I get my Custom Suits now made in The USA.

We need to make a return to elegance if our country is going to get out of this mess.

What Goes In Each Pocket of a Custom Suit

» 13 September 2011 » In Guide » 5 Comments

What Goes In Each Pocket of a Custom Suit

I was recently asked this question on Roosh’s Travel Forum (Best Travel Forum on The Internet by the way):

G,

I know smoking is your thing (best pickup line) so I thought I would ask. Do you carry a lighter on you all the time? And do you have a cigarette case you carry on you? I ask because I find it such a bitch to carry a pack on me while rolling out at night. Hell, I can’t stand carrying too much shit on me besides my keys, phone and wallet. So my question is how do you operate?

And many times I have been asked where I carry everything on a night out.

Let me break it down:

Side Jacket Pockets:

I know you are supposed to carry as little as possible in all your pockets, but a G has got to smoke.

In the Left Jacket Pocket, I carry two packs of smokes. (You don’t want to run out when the girl of your dreams asked you for a cigarette).

In the Right Jacket Pocket, I carry two lighters. Typically Zippo’s filled to the brim. (Same thing, you don’t want a flint to break, or run out of fluid at The Moment of Truth, and I don’t mean that dope Guru track either.) Sometimes a Dupont Lighter or a Dunhill lighter. And a small set of keys.

Ticket Pocket:

I get almost all my Custom Suits with Ticket Pockets. I typically don’t put anything in them unless it I am going to The Fights, The Racetrack or maybe The Opera. In which case I will put my tickets in The Ticket Pocket, make sense? (Don’t laugh, a fly girl took me to The Opera earlier this year when I was in America.)

Breast Pocket of Jacket:

Only one thing should ever go here: The Pocket Square.

Inside Jacket Pockets:

Left Inside Jacket Pocket I keep my cell phone.

In the Right Inside Jacket Pocket, I keep a huge CASH Bankroll. (Disclaimer: I might not be telling the truth about the location of huge CASH Bankroll. I still have way too many Rivals out there and things can get sticky like the back of a stamp).

Inside Pen Pocket of Jacket:

I keep a pen. And no, I don’t roll Montblanc’s or expensive pens.

I do appreciate their value, but I just can’t be bothered.

Secret Pocket:

I always have a “Secret Pocket” sewn into all my Custom Suits. Where is it exactly? Do me a favor.

In here I keep (maybe) some Gold coins (in case the Apocalypse hits), Beeks or Beans (if the night calls for it), or Top Secret Documents.

Jimmy Hat Inside Jacket Pocket:

In the Jimmy Hat Pocket (not the official name by the way) I keep jimmy hats. Multiple. You never know when a swoop is going to go down (so to speak).

Pants Pockets:

Left Trouser Pocket, I keep a folded up piece of paper for notes, and backup important information in case I lose my phone (as you can see, I don’t leave anything to chance).

Right Trouser Pocket, I keep nothing. (Sometimes the hotel key card of some dope suite).

Pockets are Frogmouth in case you were wondering.

So where do I keep the heater?

Great question.

I don’t have a special pocket sewn into my jackets in case my Tailor ever gets leaned on.

So it really depends.
