Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao VS Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito: Prediction

The fight that no one wanted, Manny Pacquiao VS Antionio Margarito will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, Saturday, November 13th at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on HBO PPV.

First off, how did Margarito even get this fight?

Oh yeah, I forgot, Pacquiao and Margarito both share the same promoter, Top Rank. Bob Arum gets high marks for craftyness and greed on this one. But let’s not get me started about the politics of boxing, let’s discuss the fight:

Weight
Manny Pacquiao VS Antionio Margarito, if I am not mistaken, is going to be fought at a catch weight of 150 pounds. On paper, this shouldn’t be much of an issue as Margarito has fought almost all of his career at welterweight. However, although Margarito seems to be in great shape, he is sparing in a rubber suit and seems pretty damn skinny.

Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao have a history of negotiating these catch weights that leave their opponents drained. So goes the benefits of being the biggest or second biggest star in the sport.

I have to think that Roach knows that this weight will drain Margarito and make him an easy target for “The Bruce Lee” of boxing. Why else would they pick Margarito to fight, besides the aforementioned Top Rank issue, and the fact that Margarito will bring in the Mexican fans and PPV buys in droves?

Margarito
On the plus side for Margarito is that he is super durable with a great chin (at least until Sugar Shane Mosley cracked it). He also is a vicious body puncher and has great uppercuts from both sides, a punch that Manny is susceptible to be hit with.

On the negative side for Margarito, aside from a huge disadvantage in foot speed and hand speed, is that he has the habit of not returning his gloves to his face after he throws punches. This could prove deadly for him as Manny’s punches come from crazy angles and loco levels.

He also tends to throw his hooks a little wide, so Pac-Man will be able to shoot shots up the middle. Look for Manny to shoot hooks between Margarito’s gloves (ie shooting the punch straight and hooking at the last moment. A jab/hook fusion of sorts).

But the worst thing Margarito seems to have going for himself is that he seems to be sponsored by Affliction or Ed Hardy or one of those extremely gay t-shirt companies. There has seemed to be an “Affliction Shirt Curse” as everyone that wears one seems to lose. And I am not just talking about all the weesh guys that wear them out to nightclubs either. (see Hatton I think, Margarito, and some other fools that are escaping me at the moment).

Pacquiao
HBO’s 24/7 is really playing up the storyline that Manny is “distracted” during training with his other commitments like being a Congressman in the Phillipines and helping other Politicians get re-elected like Democrat Harry Reid.

I am not sure if I buy it. Still, high marks for HBO on a great storyline as 24/7 remains the best show on television. (Although, the show lacks a little punch without Floyd Mayweather, Jr.)

Combos to watch for
Watch for Margarito to throw the jab, then step right, throw a straight right, left hook, then left jab, straight right combo. Margarito does this kind of throwing off the wrong foot thing and moving forward very well.

Watch for the Pacquiao’s right jab to body, straight left at an upward angle and right hook combo. And watch him skip turn out of harm’s way. This could be the knockout punch.

The Fight
I think Manny will chop up Margarito like some meat in some kaldereta and the fight will look something of a fusion between Pac-Man VS Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton and Pac-Man VS Miguel Cotto. With a stoppage coming somewhere around rounds 6-8.

It is in the realm of possibility that Margarito will put up a very inspired performance, damage Pac to the body, and simply be too rugged and big for Pacquiao. But I don’t see that happening.

The thing is, Pacquiao’s in-out, in-out combo, in-out combo routine is so tough to deal with. Margarito will catch Pac with some counters, but for every counter he does catch Manny with, Pacquiao’s in-out attack will be doing far more damage.

Pac’s speed and superior movement, and “turning the corner” on Margarito will be more than he can deal with. The template is there for Pacquiao. Cotto showed how to beat Margarito (minus the plaster fists) and so did Sugar Shane. If Mosley hadn’t already cracked Margarito’s jaw, it might be a different story.

I learned a long time ago, you don’t bet against fighters that only come around once in your lifetime (ie Pacquiao, Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran etc). Margarito is not one of those fighters.

However, I have been around the Fight Game long enough to know that anything can happen.

Anyone seen Buster Douglas lately?

Hell, someone might have plaster in their gloves, a person could parachute in the ring, one fighter could bite another’s ear, water bottles could be drugged or entourages could start a full scale melee in the ring.

And that alone is enough to make me shell out the $54 dollars, or whatever the hell they are heisting, to watch.

Pacquiao as an asserted favorite to retain his welterweight title. Currently, he has been installed as a -800 favorite to win. Clottey assumes the underdog role, going off at +500.

Don’t think this one is going to be easy for Pac Man. Fighters from Ghana are legit. Check out Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey for the data sheets.

In fact, I think Clottey has a pretty good shot a winning this fight. His size, defense, chin, strength and toughness are going to give Pacquiao fits. It is still pretty difficult to envision Pac Man losing with the roll he is on. A roll not seen since Mike Tyson was steamrolling pre-Buster Douglas. And I don’t mean E-tabs either.

That being said, Clottey will need a knockout. There is no shot he will get a decision in this one with Manny Pacquiao VS Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the horizon.

G Manifesto Hall of Fame member, Angelo Dundee on:

On what it was like working with Muhammad Ali:
“It was like going to a party every other day. It just was a tease, like I’ll give you a little insight. Everybody says Drew Brown. Drew Brown had met Muhammad in New York and then Muhammad comes back from New York and he’s training for a fight. He says, ‘Ang’—he’s training for the (Sonny) Liston fight—he says, ‘Ang, I’m bringing Drew Brown down here.’ I said, ‘What for?’. He said, ‘He makes me laugh.’ I said, ‘Okay!’”

Regarding his thoughts before Ali’s first fight with Sonny Liston:
“Muhammad felt that he was going to a party. Every fight was like that. Nothing ever bothered him. He wasn’t concerned about the guy. I kept telling Muhammad, ‘you’re bigger than this guy’, because people don’t realize Muhammad went from 182 to 212 pounds. He got bigger, he was a young kid. So when he got in the ring, I told him, ‘When you get in the middle of the ring, stand tall—and look down on the guy’. And Muhammad did exactly that and said, ‘I got you sucker.’, and this was the beginning of the fight.”

Regarding Ali’s victory over George Foreman:
“Well you know, when I heard I was going to be on your program—On the Ropes—I said to myself they’re going to ask me about the ropes in Zaire. (laughs) And I’m going to tell you, I tightened those stinking ropes at four o’clock in the afternoon but the fight wasn’t until 4am the next day. And you know what happened—the heat stretched the ropes. They were brand new hemp ropes. I didn’t want those ropes to be loose. People try to say that I designed the’ rope-a-dope’. I thought Muhammad was a dope to be on the ropes. If Foreman hit him with a forearm he would have went through the ropes. That ring was like six feet up in the air—he would have broke his back, the fight would have been all over but thank God it didn’t happen. He was so agile, and so quick, and so smart—he really did some good stuff.”

On whether Ali really asked him to stop the fight after the 14th round of the Thrilla in Manila:
“Muhammad always had a knack to suck it up. He came back to the corner and that documentary was a bunch of bologna because he came back to the corner and I said, ‘You got him baby! Get him out of there!’ This is the round they claimed I said he wanted it stopped. No, there was never any stop in Muhammad. I had to stop him that one time and it broke my heart to do it, but Muhammad wasn’t firing back. Muhammad always sucked something up; he had a knack of bringing it out and taking it to get the best of the other guy.”

On how he first started training Sugar Ray Leonard:
“The Olympic team was in New York and we were there, and Muhammad was around and he told Ray, ‘Hey! You want a good trainer? Get Angelo.’ That helped, but then when the group in Washington took him over they asked me if I would like to handle the kid. I told them I’d love to, and I got involved with Ray and he got out of the Olympics. I got along great with Ray. Then when we went to places like Providence and Boston, I made him an honorary Italian. (laughs) Hey listen! I showed him the proper way to twist spaghetti with a fork without using a spoon.”

Regarding the famous words he said to Leonard in between rounds during the Tommy Hearns fight—“You’re blowing it son”

“Boy, were those camera guys nice to me. They didn’t tape what I told him before ‘You’re blowing it kid’. (laughs) ‘You dumb, sorry you, what are you slowing down for, what are you doing, you’re fighting the guy’s fight’. Then when I was getting out of the ropes, I said ‘You’re blowing it kid’. Thank God they taped that.”

Regarding the current boxing landscape:
“I think Pacquiao and (Floyd) Mayweather will fight. I know the fans want to see that fight and if they have any kind of sense of humanity about it, either fighter, they should fight each other—just for the good of boxing. You know what? I want to go see that fight, that’s going to be a great fight. But you never know with fights. Pacquiao’s fighting (Joshua) Clottey. Clottey is a tough guy. You never know one night which fighter is going to win and it’s interesting because it’s one-on-one and to me it’s a kick to watch these guys. And I want to thank you guys for having me on the radio, because as long as you guys are talking that means we’re in action.”

Person of The Year 2010

Lately, I have been just slipping, sliding, gliding, lowriding and realizing.

When I wrote Orange County’s Top Bachelor, it reminded me on how many of these media “hype machine” created “players” I have defeated over the years.

Musicians, Actors, and Athletes have not been spared. I have named some names (re-read The G Manifesto) but for me to rip the lid off, a publisher has got to come at me like they came at Gary Vaynerchuk. 7 figs min.

Hell, with all the noteworthy scalps I have, I was mildly shocked that Time Magazine didn’t ring me up for Person of The Year, instead of Ben Bernanke.

Maybe they don’t have my cell (I do change numbers very frequently, and I am thinking seriously of ditching cell phones all together).

But that’s neither seared foie gras on the menu or a fly Nightlife Princess to attend to.

To kick it real, I have probably done more good for the economy than Bernanke. I have dropped heavy dough this year on fast living, fast women and umm, fast women. The rest I just squandered.

The more that I think about it though, I have been spending CASH in “emerging markets”; that is on swooping fly foreign girls.

So, even though Bernake is setting us up for even worst economic failure. I guess he can have the award.

Because, it’s like that, you know it’s like that, I got at him, now you never get your girl back.

All jokes aside, Manny Pacquiao should have won “Person of The Year”.

Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto: Post Fight Thoughts

Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto: Post Fight Thoughts

(Here is my Facebook, New Twitter and The G Manifesto Fan Page)

Manny Pacquiao Autographed / Signed Rare Grant Glove

I wasn’t able to do my typical prediction on Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto as I was laying low in the badlands of Norte Baja and swooping girls in Tijuana. I actually watched Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto in a bar full of crazy Mexicans and have no idea of the commentary for the fight.

(In case you wanted to know, my prediction was Manny Pacquiao in a late round KO. Although, I would have said that Cotto at 3-1 wasn’t a bad bet).

Here are my post fight thoughts:

Manny Pacquiao is a living nightmare to fight. He leads, you punch and he punches more. It is very hard to beat a guy that triples your punch output.

Pacquiao has had an amazing career. Wins over Miguel Angel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Erik Morales will do that to someone. Hell, he had an amazing career after coming on top of the Barrera and Morales wars.

The only way Cotto could have won was to: get out of the first three rounds unscathed (he didn’t), rough up and foul PacMan (he didn’t), work the body heavy (he did a little). Cotto is a little too much of a gentleman to execute the proper gameplan.

Pacquiao is The Bruce Lee of Boxing. No one has the in and out attack and rhythm of PacMan.

No one is more dangerous than Pacquiao in exchanges. If Cotto didn’t exchange and get knocked down early, the fight would have pretty even going into the 2nd half.

Manny Pacquiao Autographed / Signed Rare Grant Glove

Pacquiao’s chin is legit. He got hit with some heavy shots and stood up to them. He also took some heavy body shots, which seemed to freeze him.

Cotto has gallons of heart and courage. He easily could have quit, but instead tried to switch his gameplan and tried to win the fight up until the end.

I have little doubt that the names Rustico Torrecampo, Medgoen Singsurat hold mad weight in the Gentleman’s Clubs of Thailand and the Philippines these days.

Mayweather VS Pacquiao is on like Vietnam. They should just split 50-50 and make it happen.

Mayweather can derail the Pacquiao locomotive, but the question is if his inactivity will hurt him.

Either way, this may be boxing’s last great fight. The 80’s babies have proven themselves irrelevant.
